Germany has retained its position as the world's most powerful passport for 2018, while Australia leads the way as one of the world's most expensive.

The rankings are based on how many countries a passport holder can visit without requiring a visa.

The Australian passport remains unchanged from last year's rankings as the seventh most powerful in the world, tied with New Zealand and Greece, though the number of countries Australians can visit visa-free increased by one.

CRICKET Australia boss James Sutherland is happy to block out four prime Big Bash nights next January to play a pink ball Test as he continues to champion international cricket as the ultimate aspirational goal for Australia’s cricketers.

Despite the roaring success of the Big Bash and its potential to swell CA’s coffers when talks for a new TV rights deal amp up in the new year, long form still beats short form as the sport’s national flagship for CA.

And a pink ball Test against Sri Lanka next year is likely to bump the BBL from the schedule for up to four nights as part of a big six-Test summer.

Australia PM set to visit Sri Lanka this week

Monday, 30 October 2017 00:00 Written by

Australia Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on a 2 day tour to Israel and will also visit Sri Lanka on his way back from Israel, meeting with the country's prime minister and president to mark the 70th anniversary of Australia's bilateral relationship with the country.

We will update more news on this tour.

INCOMING Greens MP Samantha Ratnam has become the new leader of the party’s Victorian branch.

The former Moreland Mayor was announced as the surprise choice today, with current upper house member Nina Springle taking the deputy position.

Ms Ratnam is replacing retiring former leader Greg Barber in the Legislative Council, and will officially enter the chamber tomorrow.
“This is an exciting time for the Greens. The balance of power in both houses is within sight and we’re working hard to take the first step with a win in the Northcote by-election,” Ms Ratnam said.

“It’s an honour to be appointed by the Greens MPs, who are all leaders in their own right. As a social worker and councillor I’ve witnessed state government failures first hand.

“Victorians are the most progressive people in the country and we deserve a government willing to lead on the big issues.”

Ms Ratnam flagged a focus on pokies, political donations and removing coal from the state were all on the agenda.

“I am excited, humbled and honoured to stand here today. We are excited to shake up the a Victorian Parliament,” she said.

Despite being new Ms Ratnam was confident saying the Victorian Greens had a “highly competent team” to support her.

However, Ms Springle admitted the move could be seen as controversial.

“We are a self-contained unit,” Ms Springle said.

“I am sure our federal colleagues will respect our decision.”

Australian Greens Leader Richard Di Natale welcomed the announcement.

“I have known Sam for many years. She is extremely talented and well respected, as a Victorian Greens member, I’m incredibly proud to have her leading our party,” Dr Di Natale said.

“Alongside Sam, Nina Springle as deputy leader and their parliamentary team will continue to provide dynamic and progressive alternatives to the old parties as we look forward to the upcoming state election”.

Member for Melbourne Ellen Sandell said there were no other members considered during the leadership discussions.

Integrity and Treasury and Finance are two new areas of focus.

It is understood the new leadership is a bid to bring in a “changing of the guard” and freshen the party.

Former Victorian Greens Leader Greg Barber

The Greens are also hoping to win another lower house seat in the coming months with candidate Lidia Thorpe in a tight contest with Labor candidate Clare Burns in the Northcote by-election.

Ms Ratnam ran for the federal seat of Wills, in northwest Melbourne, last year but failed to win it from Labor.

She was born in Sri Lanka and fled the country in 1987 as a child before arriving in Australia with her family.

The leadership announcement comes after former Victorian Greens Leader Greg Barber said he would step down from his seat.

Weeks before, he had flagged he would not recontest his seat in the upper house which will be taken by Moreland councillor Sam Ratnam.

Mr Barber told media he was leaving politics to go fishing.

“I’ve been a very busy Green, for more than 15 years,” Mr Barber said.

“I’m going to have a little rest, do some fishing and think about my future plans.”

EXCLUSIVE | SriLankan Airlines will begin flying between Melbourne and Colombo towards the end of this year, marking the airline's long-awaited return to Australian skies.

Australia will make it more difficult to gain citizenship in a major overhaul of its migration process.

Aspiring citizens will undergo tougher tests on their English language skills and ability to demonstrate “Australian values”, PM Malcolm Turnbull said.

Applicants must also have completed four years as a permanent resident – three years longer than at present.

The move comes two days after Australia unveiled stricter visa requirements for skilled workers from overseas.

Premier Turnbull said the changes would ensure that migrants were better integrated into the community.

“It is important that they understand that they are making a commitment to our Australian values,” he said.

What are the changes?

In explaining what constituted “Australian values”, PM Turnbull said migrants must demonstrate support for religious freedom and gender equality.

“Respect for women and children … that is a key Australian value,” he said, adding domestic violence would not be tolerated.

PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull has announced he is scrapping the controversial 457 visa program for skilled migrants as part of a bid to tackle unemployment.
